EpiNorth Meeting on Epidemic Intelligence

On 19-20 November 2012 EpiNorth organised a 2-day meeting with representatives of the Russian Federal authorities for infectious disease control and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in the frame of the EpiNorth project. The meeting was held at ECDC, Stockholm. This was the first time ECDC meet representatives of infectious disease control authorities from Russia at federal level.

Three representatives from the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being (Rospotrebnadzor), a representative from PULS, EpiNorth team and ECDC experts exchanged the information on the practices and knowledge about epidemic intelligence. Russian participants informed about the system for infectious disease surveillance in the Russian Federation. Meeting participants were familiarised with the daily routines for event-based epidemic intelligence run at ECDC’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), including presentation of the tools used for Internet based information as well as advantages of the Epidemic Intelligence Information System (EPIS) platform on food and waterborne diseases (FWD) and sexually transmitted infections (STI).
The importance of epidemic intelligence in the frame of large international mass gatherings including preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games in Sochi 2014 was discussed.
